Former Seychelles Vice President Vincent Meriton has officially withdrawn from the AUC race in favour of Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga.
Making the confession from his country where he met with Raila Odinga today Saturday, Mr. Meriton noted that he had no alternative but to withdraw from the race because of the pressure that comes with the job.
“I withdraw my candidacy from AUC position race for two reasons.
“I would not have been able to withstand the pressure that goes with the position and now I lend my support to His Excellency Raila Odinga. I will spread his message of Panafricanism and prosperity for this continent,” he announced while flanked by Raila Odinga and other supporters.
Meriton noted further that the assertive role at the AUC needs a new and experienced leadership as the race is not about rivalry but who is fit to make an impact.
“I admire the drive and enthusiasm that Raila has. His long years of experience is what this continent needs as we move ahead and stamp authority on the international scene”.
Addressing in the same meeting, Mr. Odinga noted that he had a fruitful meeting with Meriton whom he described as a ‘seasoned politician’.
Odinga thanked him for announcing the withdrawal a move Odinga described as patriotism and requires a recognition.
