Fraud –Auditor’s office has pointed out contractual flaws in Nairobi County Government totaling to sh 6.9 billion.
Auditor General Nancy Gathungu last week broke down major faulty contracts which had double insurance of tenders as well as variations.
Putting Governor Anne Kananu on the spot during her submission to the county assembly, Ms Gathungu who was dissecting the financial year ended June 30, 2020 told Nairobi County Assembly that there were a lot of questionable financial transactions in the county.
In her detailed report, the auditor noted that roads, transport and public works totaling sh 4.67 billion were delayed same to ward development projects valued about sh 418.6 million.
She also revealed that in the fiscal year under review, sh1.8 billion worth of projects were either abandoned, suspended or terminated altogether.
“In their incomplete state, the projects have not yielded the benefits expected of them in spite of public funds totaling sh 6.26 billion spent on their execution,” the auditor remarked.
On Thursday February 24, Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) began investigating road contractors and procurement officers over failure to deliver on the noted projects despite payments having been delivered.
According to the Wilfred Odalo-led committee, projects with a combined sh 1.8 billion contract sum had stalled for some reason or the other which is yet to be given.
This development has put Governor Anne Kananu on the spot for she is required to be held responsible over the loss.
The unceremonious removal of her predecessor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was similarly informed by rampant corruption at the County headquarters.
