Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) officially suspends its long-serving CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua following a lengthy internal legal battle.
The suspension comes after a court ruling which allowed the newly-elected board to assume office immediately.
Dr. Mutua had fought to prevent their swearing-in and the subsequent transfer of power.
As a result of his suspension, Mutua is no longer authorised to conduct business on behalf of artists body MCSK.
The society has also disassociated itself from any contracts Mutua may have signed during his tenure that was marred by widespread criticism from musicians and industry stakeholders over his opaque handling of royalties and fund distribution. There were multiple complaints about his management style and concerns over financial mismanagement within the society.
Many musicians have expressed relief and optimism, hoping that the new leadership will prioritize their interests and address the longstanding issues that have plagued MCSK.
