Thursday, June 29, 2023 –A sh 25 million high-end range Rover was on Thursday impounded at the Mombasa Airport enroute Nairobi.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards KEBS officials have confirmed seizing the vehicle on Thursday June 19 afternoon.
KEBS, after seizing the illegal four wheeler, handed it over to the government for further iprocesses.
Sources reported that the high-end car had been cloned to hide off its exact year of manufacture and release to the countryto evade taxes.
The car was intercepted during KEBS routine inspection at the busy Mombasa Port on Thursday June 29 afternoon.
The standard regulator confirmed that the car which resembles the one also arrested sometimes back belonging to a former governor, had been imported from the United Kingdom UK to Kenya.
It was also confirmed that the said car had been fraudulently brought into the country by a highly-connected Kenyan.
“The Range Rover, whose Chassis Number SALGA2AEXLA400687 was apprehended during a routine inspection at the Regional Logistics Centre, Mombasa.
“We have since tightened inspection at the port and even before that, any contraband items intended to cross the border will be detected early through our high tech indices,” the regulator noted.
Following the interception, KEBS noted that the government can destroy or return the said car from where it was imported as it failed to meet laid down legal threshold.
A crosscheck from the market rates shows that a new version of the intercepted Range Rover costs north of sh 25 million.
