Cost of Power – Central Organisation of Trade Union COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli petitioned Parliament to reduce cost of power in the country.
Today morning of Thursday July 27, the trade unionist tendered COTU’s proposal that seeks to lower the cost of electricity.
He appeared before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Energy where he shared COTU’s proposal on the matter.
“I called upon the government of Kenya to tame Independent Power Producers (IPPs) by revoking all Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs) that have been signed with various IPPs and instead engage KenGen or establish other state parastatals to handle electricity generation and supply,” he explained.
This was succeeded by a morning meeting with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Chief Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi over their Mulembe Nation Unity.
Wetang’ula stated that his a tete-a-tete with the two centered on Luhya Nation Unity after last year’s general election.
“We must not accept any political division because it will be detrimental to development of the western region. We agreed to give the government of the day; the Kenya Kwanza Government all the necessary support as it delivers on its agenda while we push for the revival of all the stalled projects in our region,” Speaker Wetang’ula affirmed.
The three, Musalia, Wetang’ula and Atwoli all who come from Western Region have since regrouped following August 2022 general election that saw William Ruto win against Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga who was Atwoli’s candidate.
