Corruption –Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC has completed investigations into the former Kakamega County governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s corruption case and forwarded file to the ODPP office.
EACC chairperson, Bishop David Oginde, is confident that Mr. Oparanya will formally be charged with corruption and abuse of office.
Oginde who was appearing before the National Dialogue Committee NDC, on Tuesday, October 3, stated that EACC completed investigations into the ex-governor’s conduct nearly one month after his arrest.
In the multimillion case, Oparanya, a key member in Azimio la Umoja and close confidant of Mr. Odinga, is accused of misappropriating a sum of sh 1.3 billion between 2013 and 2022.
“As we speak now, we have just concluded our investigations on this particular person,” Oginde clarified.
Oginde is optimistic that the case holds water and that Oparanya has a case to respond to and clear his name from the matter.
“And it’s a very rigorous process. We do our own internal audit on each of the cases and if you check very keenly, most of the cases that we forward to the ODPP rarely fail, get withdrawn or dropped,” Oginde added.
The clergy who is now at the helm of the ethics agency, asked the opposition team not to politicize the case saying they should wait for its determination.
“The party to which this former governor belongs came out in full force alleging that this was politicization and weaponization of EACC,” Bishop Oginde said.
He also listed nine other governors including former ones who have similar cases pending. These are Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Okoth Obado (Migori) among others.
