Fraud –The Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI has warned impersonators operating pseudo social media accounts in the name of the first family.
The office of the DCI has on Sunday November 6, listed President William Ruto, first lady Rachel Ruto, Chief Justice Martha Koome among other senior State officials who have fallen victims of pseudo account operators.
The DCI has, therefore, cautioned members of the public to be wary of such fraudsters on an increase operating on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc to loot from them.
The impersonators, according to the police, promise members of the public State jobs and other favours including nonexistent scholarships and low interest business loans.
“In one such instance, a 19-year-old suspect identified as Michael Wekesa was arrested in Sirisia, after he opened a Facebook account purporting to be an employee of the Office of the First Lady,” the DCI reported.
Wekesa, who was posing as a loans officer would purport to be able to influence issuance of quick loans hence went ahead to obtain thousands of bribes from desperate Kenyans.
“In a well calculated scheme, the suspect who promised interest free loans from the esteemed First Lady’s Office, requested for a small deposit,” further read the DCI expose’.
In that regard, hundreds of unsuspecting Kenyans who are not aware of the existence of such scammers started sending money to him through a provided M-Pesa account which was then transferred to a till number under the suspect’s name.
