What’s New –Nakuru Town has officially been chartered as the 4th city in Kenya following today’s visit by the head of State.
Nakuru now joins the lean list of major cities like Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisumu which were issued with their charters many years ago.
“Nakuru City will join Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi as cities. With a reputation as East Africa’s cleanest town, all of Kenya looks forward to Nakuru City growing by leaps and bounds,” President Uhuru indicated last Tuesday during his State of the Nation address.
On his part, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui mentioned that he already has various projects lined up for the town to restore its full glory as an industrial zone in the country.
“I now roll [up my sleeves]to make Nakuru the best city in Kenya and Africa. Already, we have various projects underway that will restore the glory of Nakuru,” Governor Kinyanjui said during the charter presentation.
According to available data from the Senate, currently, Nakuru town has a population of 367,183 persons. This is above the required population of 250,000 heads for any town to become a city.
Physical planning team led by James Muchoma has stated that the town will be undergoing a complete overhaul through mega replanting steps including solving the perennial congestion in the Central Business District CBD.
Nakuru County – 7,496.5 km² – has a population of 2,162,202 according to the 2019 census. It is the third most populous county in Kenya after Nairobi and Kiambu County.
