News -All radio station have been asked to sop practicing lottery in their programmes. The Betting Control and Licensing Board BCLB has issued a circular.
In the statement, BCLB Director P. K Mbugi on Friday July 9, stated that the Board was now getting concerned with the illegal corporations between license holders and radio stations in the country.
According to Mbugi, this goes against the Betting, Lottery and Gaming Act for media houses to run such activities before seeking proper papers.
“This scenario has not only provided a fertile ground for unauthorized gaming activities but has also affected the general messaging of prize competitions and lotteries to a menial “send this and win that” without informing the public what competition or lottery they are engaging in.
“In order to address this abuse, radio stations will not be allowed to carry out any lottery or prize competition draw unless the said radio station has a gaming permit to do so,” stated Mbugi.
He added that radio stations are only allowed to run sponsored adverts and not lottery business as it is being witnessed today.
This is coming against the backdrop of increased lottery activities in many radio stations some which had become a fully fledged lottery havens.
Moreover, several organizations have also raised their concerns with the increase in unregulated gambling tendencies across media platforms.
